in which fm belfast is irresistible

so, i think icelandic music sometimes gets pigeonholded into a dreamy catagory thanks to superstars björk , sigur rós (and, by extension, a solo jónsi), and όlöf arnalds (who all excel in that dreamy, ethereal music that can easily hide much darker concepts). fm belfast, though, who also hail from iceland, kick through that stereotype with their poppy yet electro enthusiasm, as exemplified in their latest release, don't want to sleep.



what they do share with björk , at least, is their love of the weird. this is a band, after all, who have a song entitled underwear (and, yeeesss, it's about running around in your undies). and then in their song american, they claim, "i'm not afraid to taste your fist...your head is as numb as your face...pow, pow, drip, drip, from my chin to the ground...i'm going to learn american," which one can't help but wonder as they scratch their head, huh? ookay? but, sometimes weird is just what a song calls for, and in fm belfast's case, it can translate into winsome songs that are so loveable they're practically irresistable.

the titular song off their latest release is just such a song. i don't want to go to sleep either is SUCH the i can't sit still in my seat kind of song. it's infectious in its enthusiasm. so is new year, which you can download below:
