flashback friday - edge of seventeen
so, recently, i was watching oprah (YES, I OCCASIONALLY WATCH OPRAH), and she had on a slew of music goddesses (clarification: i do not count avril lavine in this group, despite her presence). of course, the first and most important rock goddess highlighted was stevie nicks.
and rightfully so. because, friends, stevie nicks IS the ultimate in rock goddesses.

a brief recap of her illustrious career: a successful solo artist as well as a member of fleetwood mac, stevie nicks is responsible for producing over forty top-50 hits and has sold over 140 million records. she's also been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame (as part of fleetwood mac). her bohemian witchy styles have influenced fashion for decades and her voice, and songs, are iconic and recognized across the globe.
futhermore, rolling stone declared her the reigning queen of rock and roll after the release of her debut album, bella donna. lots of amazing, strong rock women have come and gone, but none seem to reach stevie's stratosphere.
i've long loved stevie both as a solo artist and as part of the freaking amazing fleetwood mac (and anybody who tells you FM sucks doesn't know shit about music - take that one to the bank). and while there are dozens upon dozens of excellent songs to pick from her catalogue, i want to highlight edge of seventeen because it's practically an anthem for women. the true meaning of the song is a bit unclear, as various reports have it as an eulogy for an uncle who died, or to commemorate john lennon's death, or even merely to describe being a cougar. the truth is, it doesn't really matter, because this is the sort of song one sings along to every single time it's on and not worry what it's about because it's just too fabulous to care about anything other than the experience of listening to it.
so turn this one up. get ready to rock, peeps, and while you're singing along (because, it's inevitable you will), sing it loudly. don't care if people are looking at you funny or if you have a horrible voice. just sing, because that's what good old rock and roll is all about.
music is good. and stevie nicks excels at it.
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo...ooo...ooo"
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"
and the days go by
like a strand in the wind
in the web that is my own
i begin again
said to my friend,(everything stopped):
"baby, nothin' else mattered"
he was no more than a baby then
well, he seemed broken hearted,
something within him,
but the moment
that i first laid eyes on him
all alone on the edge of seventeen
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"
i went today
maybe i will go again tomorrow
yeah, yeah
well, the music there, it was hauntingly familiar
well, i see you doing
what i tried to do for me
with the words from a poet
and the voice from a choir
and a melody -
and nothing else mattered
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"
the clouds never expect it
when it rains
but the sea changes colors
but the sea does not change
and so with the slow graceful flow of age
i went forth with an age old desire to please
on the edge of seventeen
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"
well, then suddenly
there was no one left standing in the hall
yeah, yeah
in a flood of tears
that no one really ever heard fall at all
when i went searchin' for an answer
up the stairs and down the hall
not to find an answer
and just to hear the call of a nightbird singing:
"come away"
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"
well i hear you in the morning
and I hear you at nightfall
sometimes to be near you
is to be unable to hear you, my love
i'm a few years older than you, my love
(i'm a few years older than you)
just like the white winged dove
sings a song - sounds like she's singing:
"ooo, baby, ooo - said ooo"

in which i chat with i am not lefthanded
so, i'm very pleased to share with you a interview the husband and i did with one of our favorite indie bands recently. i've written about i am not lefthanded before (as has he) - originally from ireland, they're currently living and working in england. hard at work on their new full-length album (set to be released this year), the band also has two stellar EP's available along with a free sampler EP.

from their bio:
Fiercely independent, Anglo-Irish three-piece comprised of Kathryn(vocals/piano/guitar), Daniel (vocals/bass), and Benji (drums), I Am Not Lefthanded are known for their homemade, quirky videos as much as their lyrical, evocative music. Described as sounding like ‘Natalie Merchant fronting Death Cab for Cutie’, they’ve toured around the US, the UK and Ireland alone and as special guests for Irish and English luminaries such as Duke Special, The Rumble Strips and The Answering Machine.
kathryn was kind enough to take time out of IANL's busy recording schedule to answer some questions about the history of the band, touring, and recording for us. and for the first time ever, this will be a two-blog interview! you'll be able to find the first part here on have you met heather and the second part over on your moment of zen.
have you met heather: ok, so let's get the obvious question out of the way for people who don't know you...what's with the name?
kathryn: It's accidentally become one of the most controversial things about us. I was left-handed, when I was little. Only I had a very... traditional, but enthusiastic... teacher when I started school. 14 years of Catholic schooling later and I use my right hand for more things than my left. I read somewhere that changing the hand you write with changes the way your brain works, but then they say everything changes the way your brain works, so nothing new there.
Left-handed people seem to take it that we're saying something about them, that we're making a declarative statement about left-handed people. Where really it's more of a throwback to the person I was back then.
It's also a quote from a film - my favourite movie back when I was left-handed, one that holds some good memories for me today :)
hymh: the first songs we heard from you were very personal. how do you pull your lyrics together to create your stories?
kathryn: When I started writing, I had plenty to say, and no idea how to say it. So I used to build on the images created by writers who were far, far better than me. Endline has a line 'I never saw more trace than their shadow cross your face', which is a reference to a line from a TS Eliott poem 'Who is the third who walks beside you? When I count, there are only you and I together' The words are different, but it was the tone I wanted. Then later I started to build images of my own, but I was too embarrassed to admit what I was trying to say. I didn't want the world to know what was going on in my head. So I couched everything in elaborate metaphors. If people happened to extrapolate the same thing I did from them, then it made me happy, but I was more comfortable having plausible deniability. I grew out of that though. I figured out why I was writing music in the first place, and it wasn't really for me, it was for other people. And what was the point of writing music for someone else if they had no idea of what I was trying to say? So I became less elaborate and more honest. Anything I write now comes from the tumble of words and phrases that come into my head when I'm trying to be honest about something difficult.
hymh: has there ever been a song you heard that you instantly wish you had wrote?
kathryn: I love Ben Gibbard's lyrics. I was already in my 'it's time to be honest' phase of writing by the time I first heard the band, and some of his lines literally made me ache. Half with understanding, half with envy that I'd never thought to put something that same way. We covered 'I will follow you into the dark', and turned it into a duet. I think the harmonies were my own way of shouldering in on Death Cab's lyrics.
hymh: how's the new record coming along?
kathryn: Slowly, but then it's just too much fun. At the moment, I sort of feel like one of those diners who's the last to leave the restaurant when all the waiting staff want to go home. Every time we're nearly done with a song, one of us seems to come up with something else we'd like to try for it. It's blind enthusiasm for what we're doing, but makes me feel like we're being a bit greedy with our time. Some very kind and trusting people gave us their money to make this album. I'd like them to actually hear it some day soon.
thanks so much, kathryn!

it's hard to pick a song to share from this fabulous band, but i think i'll go with lifelines. it's pretty typical of what you can expect from IANL: stellar vocals from kathryn (honestly, she's got one of the most beautiful voices out there right now), emotional lyrics that are spot-on with real-life feelings, and a gorgeous melody.
i know that this might calm down,
and i know i could sink and not drown
but treading all night's getting old
and sunrise these days leaves me cold
i know, I can't turn this around
cause when i cut your lifeline
i started falling - so far
i couldn't look back
when i cut your lifeline
you were calling - so hard
i couldn't shout back
so no more of the long walks through town
and no more talks of who let who down
though now I've said all my goodbyes,
my mind is filled with kind replies
i know, i know.
cause when i cut your lifeline
i started falling - so far
i couldn't look back
when i cut your lifeline
you were calling - so hard
i couldn't shout back
let it all settle down, let it all settle down
and yet i think i'll miss you if i fall...
here's kathryn and daniel doing a live version of the song:
head over to the band's bandcamp site to buy/download songs from their three EP's (including the free previously on IANL). i'll be posting their new video for alone as soon as it's available!

in which pink frost laments bad weather & lost loves
so, i have a thing for shoegazing. maybe it's because shoegazing lends itself to sad songs (of which i am partial to). maybe it's because there's a dreamy quality that's so very alluring and seductive. or maybe it's because listening to shoegazing takes me back to my youth.
which leads me to introduce you to a great new shoegazing band from chicago, pink frost.

a brief history of the trio:
Pink Frost came together through a shared affinity for reverb, air guitar, and disgust. After several suicide attempts and realizing that the Chicago shoegaze scene completely sucked… they immediately began work on what would become their E.P. Self-titled and self released the three tracks create music for inclement weather, infinite sadness, and songs for Owsley.
sounds just like the sort to produce dreary music to fall in love with, right?
the three song EP is filled with lots of guitars melding over each other and hazy, echo-y vocals that come across as so earnest and vulnerable. the best song has to be the sun, which, truth be told, literally gave me goosebumps when i first heard it. it's filled with layers that build upon other layers which eventually strip away until nearly nothing is left, which is fitting, since it's about love, loss, yearning, and a general bitch-fest of poor weather (which, as we all know, is really just another way of saying "i miss you.").
it is a gorgeous song, friends. and so very worthy of your listen.
i kinda miss my home
but i really hate the heat
i kinda miss her, too
but she can visit me
i bruised up my bones
the second time this week
and i got so drunk
that i cried in my sleep
i'm gonna to miss the train
goddamn this weather
why does it always rain?
this walk takes forever
if my shoes weren't wet
then i could walk it better
please come home again
please, come home again
why does it rain?
goddamn this weather
the sun is gonna come
and take you away
please come home again
check out the rorschach-filled video:
the band is reportedly at work on a full-length album which will be released later this year.

in which breanne düren sings of daydreams
so, i'm going to preface that today's song, daydreams by breanne düren, is pretty much a guilty pleasure song. it's the stuff that adorable and sweet bubblegum pop is made of - innocent lyrics about crushes, a catchy melody, and a singer whose voice radiates fun, ice cream, bff's and butterflies.

breanne düren, who has been singing back-up on owl city's records, is young - and it shows in the exuberance that radiates out of her songs. daydreams, which was remixed by owl city (and it shows, because it's just like a song a female owl city would sing), is filled with rapid lyrics and mystical "i'm i love" sounds. when i listen to it, i'm taken back to junior high and high school, when things were so simple and yet felt so complicated thanks to discovery and bombardment of new emotions.
it's a girly song. it's cute and sweet and innocent and all sorts of pink, adorable things. is it sugary? yes. will a ton of males clamor for this song? doubtful. will girls gravitate to it? you bet. it's like reading a teen girl's diary entry - you know you probably shouldn't be snooping, but you just can't help yourself.
i never noticed how
my heart can beat so loud
when i think of you
and i can focus now
got my head up in the clouds
when i think of you
my heart's so lost
in all the chaos
it's got me crazy
with the spell you cast
it all happened so fast
goodbye to loneliness
and when i close my eyes
you play like a movie in my mind
you are the star of my daydreams
everything you are is my reverie
can you feel my heart when you're moving closer and closer?
you are the star of my daydreams
everything you are is my reverie
can you feel my heart when you're moving closer and closer?
oh, i think we
that we were meant to be
everything you do
is so fresh and brand new
that i can't help
this crush on you
i wanna be the breakthrough
kind of love to you
sparks are flying
are butterflies
and i'm so high
on the spell you cast
it all happened so fast
goodbye to loneliness
and when i close my eyes
you play like a movie in my mind
and i wanna rewind over and over
a thousand times
you are the star of my daydreams
everything you are is my reverie
can you feel my heart when you're moving closer and closer?

you play like a movie in my mind
and i wanna rewind over and over
a thousand times
you are the star of my daydreams
everything you are is my reverie
can you feel my heart when you're moving closer and closer?
you are the star of my daydreams
everything you are is a reverie
can you feel my heart when you're moving closer and closer?
oh i think we
that we were meant to be
oh, when i close my eyes
you play like a movie in my mind
and i wanna rewind
over and over a thousand times

in which matt lowell sings of swan lake
so, matt lowell has been making the transition from singer-songwriter to indie pop lately through intricate instrumental parts and thought provoking lyrics. sounding a bit like a more cheery david gray, lowell, a graduate of the berklee college of music, has been extensively touring throughout NYC as well as finding his music in various tv placements.

swan lake, the lead single off of the eponymous EP, is a lovely song that feels both anxious, hopeful, and melancholy at the same time. lowell’s voice is just the right mix of gritty and smooth against the sweet backup vocals and building melodies.
here i am again
coldness of your breath
cabin of your mind
to take away your freedom
to steal away your time
to share your living pain
you can give me life
instead i'll go to france
instead i'll be in paris
instead i'll go to france
instead i'll be in paris
will you go now?
will you hunt me down?
it hasn't been the same
i need to say your name
i'm standing on the dirty x
diving in swan lake
to take away your freedom
i can share your living pain
and you can give me life
instead i'll go to france
instead i'll be in paris

flashback friday - candy
so, everybody has their favorite voices to listen to. i've got a number that i feel are perfect - matt berninger (who loyal readers know i fangirl gush over way too much), jon denver (NO DISSING. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK OF JOHN DENVER. HE WAS AWESOME.), mandy patinkin (yes. i really did just put his name on this list)... those are all guys, you're saying. what about women? well, obviously, joni mitchell is on that list (singer of the best song ever recorded), ella fitzgerald, stevie nicks, and kate pierson (of B-52's fame).
c'mon. admit it. kate pierson's voice is sublime.

way back when (in 1990 - holy crap, that was 21 years ago. i'm feeling ancient now), when i was in high school (yes, i've just dated myself), i was utterly addicted to candy. a collaboration between the very popular kate pierson and iggy pop, candy laments lost love and regret. and while this is technically an iggy pop song (and, to date, his most commercial success), the reason why i adored it as much as i did was because of kate's vocals. strong and clear, her voice serves as the backbone of the song.
totes amazing, even 21 years later.
it's a rainy afternoon
in 1990
in the big city,
geez it's been 20 years-
candy - you were so fine
beautiful, beautiful girl from the north
you burned my heart with a flickering torch
i had a dream that no one else could see
you gave me love for free
candy, candy, candy
i can't let you go
all my life, you're haunting me
i loved you so
candy, i can't let you go
life is crazy
candy baby
yeah, well it hurt me real bad when you left
and i'm glad you got out, but -
but i miss you
i've had a hole in my heart for so long
i've learned to take it and just smile along
down on the street
those men are all the same
i need a love
not games
not games
candy, candy, candy
i can't let you go
all my life, you're haunting me
i loved you so
candy, i can't let you go

in which i continue my countdown towards codes and keys
so, here's another song off of death cab for cutie's upcoming album, codes and keys.

am i looking forward to this album?
why, yes. yes i am. may 31st, peeps.
SQUEE!!!!!
until then, enjoy the very awesome home is a fire:
sleep, sleep with the lights on
shutter the shades drawn
there's too many windows
noise, cars on the freeway
tempting a clean break
there's nowhere left to go
watching the room swing
through cracks in the concrete
plates, they will shift
houses will shake
fences will drift
we will awake
only to find
nothing's the same
nothing's the same
home, home is a fire
a burning reminder
of where we belong, love
it won't build up around us
but bricks make me nervous
they're only so strong, love
yes, they're only so strong, love
plates, they will shift
houses will shake
fences will drift
we will wake
only to find
nothing's the same
as yesterday

in which santigold's new single is leaked
so, santigold (who used to be santogold but changed her name, according to rumors, thanks to a lawsuit) has a new song out!

produced by santigold and q-tip, with backing vocals by the yeah yeah yeah's karen o, go is a powerful piece dark post-apocalyptic punk. angry, disillusioned, and cynical, it combines a monotone melody against rapid-fire chorus stanzas.
here's what santigold has to say about go:
“This song comments on the era we live in and the NEW American dream. The dream used to be that if you worked hard, and you were good at what you did, you could pave your own way in America and the sky was the limit. … However, things have changed. The NEW American Dream is to become rich and famous by happenstance – or sex tapes – and to get there with as little work or talent as possible. And as a result, we are suffering – though many of us don’t know it – as quality becomes a notion of the past. We’re ruining art, our planet, and our health, all due to our newfound obsession with instant gratification.”
can't argue there (AHEM kardashians).
people want my power
and they want my station
storm my winter palace
but they couldn't take it
all the way to paris
round my reputation
try to pull my status
but they couldn't fake it
hey hey!

in which the head and the heart gets lost in my mind
so, the head and the heart recently offered up another free song to drool over, and friends, just like the rest i've heard from them, this is another pitch-perfect piece of americana.

back when i was an undergrad and hung out in bars and whatnot, there was this great thing called a jukebox (hee hee!) that played music. there was always a bitter fight over who got to control the jukebox at my regular dive (unfortunately the allman brothers fans seemed to win out a lot), but my friends and i had a thing for what we called the hoo-hoo songs. this pretty much included any song that had people singing "hoo-hoo" or "woo-hoo" or any variation on the theme. the rolling stones and eagles were faves of ours (plenty of hoo-hoo songs there!) - and nowadays, anytime i hear a song that has this kind of singing, i'm instantly transported back to standing in front of a jukebox while searching for the perfect songs to have fun to.
you're probably asking, what the hell does all of that have to do with this song? well, lost in my mind is a hoo-hoo song. and man, do i love it all the more for that. it's the kind of song that you can imagine road-tripping to, or hanging out with your friends (in your regular dive) while listening to jukebox gems, or barbecuing to. it's the kind of song that makes you appreciate music and how, sometimes, you don't need flashy or controversial to be listen-worthy.
have a listen. get ready to put it on repeat and wish that it could be on a killer jukebox.
put your dreams away for now
i won't see you for some time
i am lost in my mind
i get lost in my mind
momma once told me
you're already home where you feel love
i am lost in my mind
i get lost in my mind
oh my brother,
your wisdom is all that i need
oh my brother
don't you worry 'bout me
don't you worry
don't you worry
don't worry about me
how's that bricklayin' coming?
how's your engine running?
is that bridge getting built?
are your hands getting filled?
won't you tell me, my brother
'cause there are stars up above
we can start moving forward
how's that bricklayin' coming?
how's your engine running?
is that bridge getting built?
are your hands getting filled?
won't you tell me, my brother?
'cause there are stars up above

lost in my mind
lost in my mind
oh, i get lost in my mind

in which i chat with teen girl scientist monthly
so, i recently wrote about teen girl scientist monthly's hyper and addictive safari. intrigued by the band and definitely digging their sound, i wanted to learn more. two members of the band, matt berger, lead male vocals and guitarist, and matt gliva, the bassist, were kind enough to answer some questions for me about what's going on with TGSM and where they're headed.
have you met heather: so, i have to ask - how did the name teen girl scientist monthly (which i love, by the way!) originate?
matt gliva: Out of the great random blue yonder and a sense of nostalgia?
matt berger: I was going through a bunch of old papers last year, and I found it written down. I write weird stuff like that all the time, and I don’t always leave any clues as to what I was thinking when I do. But I found this scrap of paper and I tacked it to my wall because I liked it and when I was trying to name the band about a week before our first show and hating everything I came up with, there it was. And I was like, well, that’s a hell of a lot better than “Gang Coach.”
hymh: how did the band come together?
berger: I was offered a gig and accepted without actually having a band, so I just called up all of the people I really wanted to work with. It was all really last minute, so we were sort of grabbing people from strange places. Morgan and Gliva I knew from a previous band, which isn’t too weird, I guess. But Cathy was a musical director for a show I composed for and Matsu is a classically trained jazz percussionist I know through a few friends. Anne’s an old friend, but I had no idea she played violin before I was freaking out a week before the gig and she was like “oh, I play that.” It came together on it’s own, which was nice – it was sort of under the banner of “wanna do something fun next week?”
hymh: what's the creative process for your music like? does everyone in the group have a say in building your songs?
berger: It’s been changing over time. I like to record full demos before I get a song to the band, just because how everything in the arrangement builds affects how I like the structure. Everyone always has a say in his or her parts, and, now that we’ve been playing together a while, we’ve started to have a say in how each other plays as well. So arrangements have become democratic and much more organic to the band.
gliva: We craft the group dynamic by way of repetition, using the audience at our shows as our soundboard, until it feels right. Seems like the set for every show is a hypothesis... IF we were to play like THIS, THEN the audience will feel THAT. When the audience dances uncontrollably and sings along at the top of their lungs, we've hit bullseye, and the song is like a good answer, to what, I don't know.
berger: Yes. That.
hymh: you recently put out an EP - what's up next for teen girl scientist monthly?
gliva: More shows and more shows, some East Coast touring perhaps, and a second EP to be recorded and released this summer.
berger: We’re shooting the music video for Fever, off of Pioneer Ghost, this weekend. Michael Raynes, the guy that did the Safari video is heading that up.
gliva: Think Carson Daly's got his eye on us for TRL...
berger: We want to play TRL!
hymh: any plans to tour across the states?
berger: Yeah! We're hoping to get up and down the east coast this Fall. We’ve never toured before. We’re looking forward to it.
thanks, guys! gotta say, i'm looking forward to seeing the video for fever - the song, which sounds a bit like the national on amphetamines with a whole lotta groove and david bowie 80's vibe, is awesome. listen to it below:
and then there's maya dance trees, which has pac-man sounds. YES. PAC-MAN SOUNDS. you know you're intrigued:

flashback friday - a good idea
so, back when i was an undergrad, one of my very favorite albums was sugar's copper blue. i mean, i played this thing to death. i knew every single word of every single song. so whenever i hear one of the songs from copper blue, i'm immediately taken back to extremely hot days, equally hot nights, and the university of arizona.
sugar was indie god bob mould's second band - the first being, of course, the very excellent hüsker dü. formed in the early 90's, sugar went on to put out two albums (beginning with copper blue), plus an ep and a b-side collection.

copper blue was (is) really an ace album - i debated whether or not to post hoover dam or the slim (both of which i had massive music crushes on), but eventually, i knew i had to discuss a good idea. probably the most well-known of all sugar songs, it was also the song my friends and i played the most while singing at the top of our lungs. dark and twisted, it's about murder - a girl asks a guy to drown her (or at least, that's what he says). seems odd that this would be the lead single, especially since it comes across as a thrashing fun song, but - there it is. this is bob mould, after all, and no one ever accused the dude of singing the happy tunes.
song trivia! bob has always claimed this is his tribute to the pixies.
they went down to the river
on a warm summer night
the air was think with the
smell of temptation
he said why don't we lay in the water
let the water run over me
and she grinned and she said
now she said now she said
now that's a good idea
she said she said
now that's a good idea
she said she said
now that's a good idea
she said she said
now that's a good idea
she said she said
he held her head high in his hands
he held her down deep in the stream
he saw the bubbles and matted hair
mixed in with seaweed
she started to scream
was it something i said
was it something i said
and she said and she said
and she said she said
now that's a good idea she said she said
to be alone with you she said she said
i've been waiting for years
and i'd rather be dead
that's a good idea he said he said
he held her down in the river
he held her down in the water
another river of mud
wash away those tears
he said and he said
now that's a good idea
he said now that's a good idea
he said now that's a good idea
he said now that's a good idea
i saw them from the ocean
she didn't seem to mind
didn't fight at all
she didn't fight it at all
some things are best left alone
sometimes i'm best left alone
and sometimes i see you in the water
at night at night at night
that's a good idea she said she said
i wanna feel you in the water
with your hands on my head
push you down into the water
she said she said
now that's a good idea she said she said
now that's a good idea that's a good idea
she said she said
now she said now she said
that's a good idea that's a good idea
that's a good idea

(mp3) a good idea by sugar
here's bob mould (apart from sugar) performing the song in 2005:
buy copper blue, the album a good idea is off of, HERE.
sugar was indie god bob mould's second band - the first being, of course, the very excellent hüsker dü. formed in the early 90's, sugar went on to put out two albums (beginning with copper blue), plus an ep and a b-side collection.
copper blue was (is) really an ace album - i debated whether or not to post hoover dam or the slim (both of which i had massive music crushes on), but eventually, i knew i had to discuss a good idea. probably the most well-known of all sugar songs, it was also the song my friends and i played the most while singing at the top of our lungs. dark and twisted, it's about murder - a girl asks a guy to drown her (or at least, that's what he says). seems odd that this would be the lead single, especially since it comes across as a thrashing fun song, but - there it is. this is bob mould, after all, and no one ever accused the dude of singing the happy tunes.
song trivia! bob has always claimed this is his tribute to the pixies.
they went down to the river
on a warm summer night
the air was think with the
smell of temptation
he said why don't we lay in the water
let the water run over me
and she grinned and she said
now she said now she said
now that's a good idea
she said she said
now that's a good idea
she said she said
now that's a good idea
she said she said
now that's a good idea
she said she said
he held her head high in his hands
he held her down deep in the stream
he saw the bubbles and matted hair
mixed in with seaweed
she started to scream
was it something i said
was it something i said
and she said and she said
and she said she said
now that's a good idea she said she said
to be alone with you she said she said
i've been waiting for years
and i'd rather be dead
that's a good idea he said he said
he held her down in the river
he held her down in the water
another river of mud
wash away those tears
he said and he said
now that's a good idea
he said now that's a good idea
he said now that's a good idea
he said now that's a good idea
i saw them from the ocean
she didn't seem to mind
didn't fight at all
she didn't fight it at all
some things are best left alone
sometimes i'm best left alone
and sometimes i see you in the water
at night at night at night
that's a good idea she said she said
i wanna feel you in the water
with your hands on my head
push you down into the water
she said she said
now that's a good idea she said she said
now that's a good idea that's a good idea

in which ben howard & his guitar make beautiful music
so, there's something to be said for gentle music - the kind that sinks into you and then spreads out into every limb and then to the tips of your fingers and toes so that it consumes you. music that you envision being part of your life's soundtrack.
know what i mean?
ben howard makes that kind of music.

an introduction to ben, from his facebook page:
I travel lots, surf when I can, probably drink too much, definitely think too much, and at 22 still make irrational choices. I like the outdoors and the Autumn. I’m happiest on the road or at home with friends.
Musically I started playing and writing as a kid and it’s maybe the one thing that’s never changed. Mum was a big listener to all the greats- the likes of John Martyn, Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, Donovan etc so that’s played a big part in my life (Dad was more of a Yes and Pink Floyd man). Our tape collection is pretty good.
with intricate, beautiful guitar melodies and thoughtful, concise lyrics, ben's crafting songs which may remind you of bon iver, iron & wine or josé gonzález . he's garnered himself a loyal following in the UK (especially amongst the west coast surfing community), often selling out the venues he performs in. it's only a matter of time before his music grabs US audiences, too.
three tree town, the closing track off of his upcoming ep, is such a quiet, carefully constructed piece of acoustic folk. all of the elements, much like a puzzle, fit together together so perfectly - but in contradiction, i love that there's a mixture of despair and hope, darkness and sweetness. it's so much like real life. nothing is all sunshine and rainbows or, conversely, doom and gloom all the time. there's always a messy combination of both - and ben gets that in this track.
listen to and download three tree town from the soundcloud below:
oh, come in from the darkness
from the edge of this three town town
'cause it's thick in the woods out there
settles harder than the cold winter ground
oh, come in from the shadows
of these boot-black, marching clouds
'cause trouble falls like rain
lately it's been pouring down
oh, i've seen loneliness
as she wrapped me up with such tenderness
oh, i've seen loneliness
as she tied me down in her sweet caress
oh, comne in from the confines
of your own mind, my dear
'cause worry is all you'll find there, it's clear
and tomorrow will always come
tomorrow may well bring the sun
oh, i've seen loneliness
as she wrapped me up with such tenderness
oh, but i - i've seen happiness
as she came round here yesterday
in her bright blue dress
and we go ooohh-oh-oh

in which nico stai shares a gorgeous b-side
so, holy hell, peeps, i am so in love with today's song. i wrote about nico stai awhile back and his fabulous one october song - well, recently, he offered up this b-side to his facebook list as a thanks for his fans' support. and honestly, if this is what his new material is like for his upcoming album, i can hardly wait to hear it.

home is not where i come from is, on paper, so simple - just vocals against a guitar. it's this quiet foundation, though, that sets the scene for a song that radiates a beautiful strength in terms of what it means to have someone there for you, and, in turn, be there for them. hard to believe this song isn't going to make it on the official album (which he just started recording this week) - plus, according to his facebook page, home is not where i come from is part of a three song series. let's hope we get to hear the other two parts!
don't don't don't don't don't you know
home is not where i come from
don't don't don't don't don't you see
none of it even matters to me
i've got my eyes, they're set on the prize, yeah
been running forward since the day i was born
and it won't mean that it means nothing to me
it's just one day, man, you find what you want
well if they ever take you out
i'm going out too
so let your hair down, we're walking on top
fix your eyes, we're taking it all
'cause you know this town never did a thing for you and i
yeah, this town always left us by the side
and in the morning i look out my window
and i see you smiling and leaning to the side
you know i need a reason not to die
well, hell - you might as well be it for awhile
you know the day they take you out
is the day i'm going out, too
it's a wild wild wild world out there
and we've got reasons and enemies to spare
the heart in the floor and my head up in the clouds
yeah, i'll never work, but you're the best i ever found
and it's been years, years, years now
but i'm still here, just dreaming about your eyes
and if you hear this and you start to sing along
it's 'cause you know what it feels to not belong
and if you ever need a comeback,
i can be the thing you come back to
yeah, and if what you really need is a reason,
hell, i'll be the reason, too
don't don't don't you know
home is not where i come from
don't don't don't you see
none of it even matters to me

in which jim bianco sings of sinners
so, listening to sinners, by misfit-y singer-songwriter jim bianco, is a lot like being at a frat party. or a college party. or pretty much anywhere people are living it up with few cares in the world. in fact, the song itself is all about exactly that - having fun.
bianco, who has toured with the likes of imogene heap and loudon wainwright III, can be quite cheeky with his songs, which is refreshing. don't get me wrong - obviously, as loyal readers can attest, i delight in serious, sad songs, but sometimes, a girl's gotta have her guilty pleasures. and jim bianco is just the sort of artist to supply such songs.
his latest release, loudmouth (which was funded entirely by fans), is a homage to bianco's personality. according to his website,
And so Jim Bianco goes at it again; exposing, embarrassing and offending ex-girlfriends, future girlfriends, fellow singer/songwriters and, most notably, himself.
Speaking to the sinner and the heartbroken in all of us, Jim Bianco has sifted through the filth and wreckage in his heart and put it to music on his new record, “LOUDMOUTH”. And as always, he’s done it in a way that makes women want to simultaneously sleep with him and slap him in the face; and men want to pick a fight and sing along.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! i love it! honestly, peeps. doesn't that right there make you want to listen to his stuff?
[note - the whole album isn't totally irreverent, though. there's a song called talented that's almost startlingly serious and assuredly heartfelt, if not a bit insulting. love it!]
yeah, you want to listen. give sinners a whirl:
my friends and i are sinners each and every one
i hope we'll be forgiven for the damage that we've done
and if we're not forgive well at least we had our fun
heave-ho, to hell we go, look-out here we come
my friends and i are sinners we take poison in our cups
and it goes down like gasoline when we say bottoms up
we won't live forever but we act like we will
heave-ho, to hell we go careful now don't spill
my friends and i are sinners and we have been all along
we try our best to do what's right
but it turns out all wrong
we end up hungover sometimes with a song
heave-ho, to hell we go c'mon sing along
my friends and i are sinners each and every one
i hope we'll be forgiven for the damage that we've done
and if we're not forgiven well at least we had our fun
heave-ho, to hell we go, look-out here we come
my friends and i are sinners we'll take you home to bed
and if you knew the things we'd do
your face would turn all red
but when we tell the story we won't recall your name
but i am sure that you prefer that that's how it remain

in which lindi ortega sings of angels
so, unfortunately, you won't be able to get your hands on lindi ortega's album, little red boots, until june 7th of this year, but i wanted to share a video of one of the songs off said album. angels, which was recorded entirely on ortega's iphone, is a slice of singer-songwriter-alt-country that highlights lindi's sweet vocals against twangy guitars.

from lindi's blog, here's the genesis of the video:
After my blackberry went bust I decided to get me an iphone, now I still think typing on the iphone is a real son of a bitch, but the apps they offer really make up for my ridiculous texting grammar and nonsensical auto-corrects. Before I knew it, I had a phone... and.. a fancy new camera, a guitar tuner, a gaming device, a voice recorder, and video machine all in one. I started playing around with apps and discovered the super 8 app and thought it looked really cool. Before I knew it I was making ironic little artsy films about squirrels on the front lawn eating peanuts, and then I wondered if I could use that app to make an entire music video. Now, I thought that this was a genius idea and I was going to be getting a genius medal for thinking of it, however, one swift search on youtube and I came across a number of cool iphone music videos, so clearly my idea was not original.. nor genius. HOWEVER, the fact that it had already been done did not deter me. It just made me want to try doing my own, and I figured if those regular folks on youtube can do it.. then why the hell can't I?
Fast forward to some months later, when I actually had a day to kill and a nice friend to drive me to a snowy graveyard in the "dead" of winter, and there I was, taking footage of head stones and sculptures, whilst constantly apologizing to the bones of the deceased I was walking upon. The song was called Angels, a tune about loneliness, isolation, and wishful, yet morbid, thinking, that maybe in death I could make some friends.. I suppose I could have just as easily called the song Ghosts, but I do have a penchant for winged things. What better place to capture these images then at the ole cemetery.
lindi will be performing two shows in LA this week - up first is a free show at the libertine on april 18th. then she'll be heading over to LA's amazing and intimate hotel cafe on april 19th for a 7pm show. go HERE to learn more about the show.

so, i absolutely love this video because a) it fits the song perfectly, b) it's got puppets (WHO CAN RESIST PUPPETS?), c) it's super sad, and d) it reminds me of those rankin-bass stop-motion movies from my childhood (like mad monster party? - woot!) that i adored. plus, it's josh ritter, who is awesome all in himself.

flashback friday - disintegration
so, when you ask most gen-xers what their favorite bands of the 80's were, inevitably, you're going to get a majority clamoring for the cure. and why not? the cure was perfect icy cool-pseudo-goth-awesomeness. dreary at times, depressing as all hell at others, robert smith and co. wrote a soundtrack for an entire generation's angst. thousands of teens oohed and awed over the sheer romance of just like heaven (which only goes to show you how there are a lot of peeps out there who don't give two listens to what lyrics actually say) and suffered alongside pictures of you with their breakups.

something that i particularly loved about the cure was how their songs rambled. these were no shorty-mcshortison songs that clocked in at a cheesy, yet radio-friendly minute and a half with a dozen words sang over and over - no, oftentimes the songs went on for minutes upon minutes with stories that (for those of us actually paying attention) yanked you in and dragged you underneath the dark waves of the deep end. stark, raw poetry that soothed while stabbing, the cure's music allowed generations of teens to embrace the moodiness that came with the struggles of growing up.
listening to it today is no different. the cure's catalogue is still just as powerful as when first released.
no, i'm not going to share just like heaven with you. i'll leave that to others. instead, i want to remind you of the greatness that is the cure with disintegration. i've lately refallen in love with this song thanks to its overwhelming presence in the background of a pivotal scene in my latest book, codename: mo. this is an effing brilliant song, peeps. GAH. man, is robert smith a fricking genius or what? don't bother telling me no, because i just won't listen to you.
oh i miss the kiss of treachery
the shameless kiss of vanity
the soft and the black and the velvety
up tight against the side of me
and mouth and eyes and heart all bleed
and run in thickening streams of greed
as bit by bit it starts the need
to just let go
my party piece
oh i miss the kiss of treachery
the aching kiss before i feed
the stench of a love for a younger meat
and the sound that it makes
when it cuts in deep
the holding up on bended knees
the addiction of duplicities
as bit by bit it starts the need
to just let go
my party piece
but i never said i would stay to the end
so i leave you with babies and hoping for frequency
screaming like this in the hope of the secrecy
screaming me over and over and over
i leave you with photographs
pictures of trickery
stains on the carpet and
stains on the scenery
songs about happiness murmured in dreams
when we both us knew
how the ending would be...
so it's all come back round to breaking apart again
breaking apart like i'm made up of glass again
making it up behind my back again
holding my breath for the fear of sleep again
holding it up behind my head again
cut in deep to the heart of the bone again
round and round and round
and it's coming apart again
over and over and over
now that i know that i'm breaking to pieces
i'll pull out my heart
and i'll feed it to anyone
crying for sympathy
crocodiles cry for the love of the crowd
and the three cheers from everyone
dropping through sky
through the glass of the roof
through the roof of your mouth
through the mouth of your eye
through the eye of the needle
it's easier for me to get closer to heaven
than ever feel whole again
i never said i would stay to the end
i knew i would leave you with babies and everything
screaming like this in the hole of sincerity
screaming me over and over and over
i leave you with photographs
pictures of trickery
stains on the carpet and
stains on the memory
songs about happiness murmured in dreams
when we both of us knew
how the end always is
how the end always is...

something that i particularly loved about the cure was how their songs rambled. these were no shorty-mcshortison songs that clocked in at a cheesy, yet radio-friendly minute and a half with a dozen words sang over and over - no, oftentimes the songs went on for minutes upon minutes with stories that (for those of us actually paying attention) yanked you in and dragged you underneath the dark waves of the deep end. stark, raw poetry that soothed while stabbing, the cure's music allowed generations of teens to embrace the moodiness that came with the struggles of growing up.
listening to it today is no different. the cure's catalogue is still just as powerful as when first released.
no, i'm not going to share just like heaven with you. i'll leave that to others. instead, i want to remind you of the greatness that is the cure with disintegration. i've lately refallen in love with this song thanks to its overwhelming presence in the background of a pivotal scene in my latest book, codename: mo. this is an effing brilliant song, peeps. GAH. man, is robert smith a fricking genius or what? don't bother telling me no, because i just won't listen to you.
oh i miss the kiss of treachery
the shameless kiss of vanity
the soft and the black and the velvety
up tight against the side of me
and mouth and eyes and heart all bleed
and run in thickening streams of greed
as bit by bit it starts the need
to just let go
my party piece
oh i miss the kiss of treachery
the aching kiss before i feed
the stench of a love for a younger meat
and the sound that it makes
when it cuts in deep
the holding up on bended knees
the addiction of duplicities
as bit by bit it starts the need
to just let go
my party piece
but i never said i would stay to the end
so i leave you with babies and hoping for frequency
screaming like this in the hope of the secrecy
screaming me over and over and over
i leave you with photographs
pictures of trickery
stains on the carpet and
stains on the scenery
songs about happiness murmured in dreams
when we both us knew
how the ending would be...
so it's all come back round to breaking apart again
breaking apart like i'm made up of glass again
making it up behind my back again
holding my breath for the fear of sleep again
holding it up behind my head again
cut in deep to the heart of the bone again
round and round and round
and it's coming apart again
over and over and over
now that i know that i'm breaking to pieces
i'll pull out my heart
and i'll feed it to anyone
crying for sympathy
crocodiles cry for the love of the crowd
and the three cheers from everyone
dropping through sky
through the glass of the roof
through the roof of your mouth
through the mouth of your eye
through the eye of the needle
it's easier for me to get closer to heaven
than ever feel whole again
i never said i would stay to the end
i knew i would leave you with babies and everything
screaming like this in the hole of sincerity
screaming me over and over and over
i leave you with photographs
pictures of trickery
stains on the carpet and
stains on the memory
songs about happiness murmured in dreams
when we both of us knew
how the end always is
how the end always is...

in which teen girl scientist monthly goes on safari
so, a lot of my favorite bands have been around awhile, and have the age and experience to back up their awesomeness - but there's something to be said for the exuberance that youth can bring. oftentimes musically unrestrained and joyful, young bands can have exciting sounds that oftentimes act like a dash of hot sauce into an otherwise bland musical atmosphere.
i say this because i've recently had a listen to a very young band - teen girl scientist monthly. this group, made up of six members, first performed together in august 2010. since then, they've been touring the new york club circuit as well as putting out both a demo and official ep.
don't mistake all of this for slapdash crap music, though. teen girl scientist monthly (which, can i just say, is a delightfully quirky and bizarre name?) works as a new, yet well-functioning machine. Choral boy-girl singing, bouncy-loud beats, hyper guitar lines and punk flavorings make for some crazy fun sounds.
safari, the single off of their ep pioneer ghost, is a perfect example of this. morgan lynch's throaty vocals are slyly pitch perfect against matt berger's back-up accompaniments, but honestly, the entire song just sounds like a fricking great time. like the band, themselves, is having the time of their lives playing it. and that, peeps, makes this song irresistible.
have a listen. then try to tell me you didn't want to get up and dance like you do when you think no one is watching.
what’s all the hurry?
where’s all the time?
what was i learning?
i don’t need it
find my a forest
fetch me the sky
where was my worry?
i don’t need it
i trade my lessons for a mend
and lay my pressures to the fence
i’ll pay my debtors from the end
cause hell this ain’t the end
let’s go on safari
let’s see what we find
there’s no need to hurry
i don’t mind it
we’ve only our story
we’ve no need for time
if they find it boring
i don’t mind it
i wave my presence of pretense
and save my questions for the end
i trade my obsession of a sense
the sense has met it’s end
and oh i grew too fast
oh where was my heart?
and i wanted death
to quit a bleeding spark
so back to the strain
of the far off run
and i will chew my reign
because i am not done
let’s go where the dark is
let’s go where we fear
we’ll try where the heart is
i can find it
we’ll dig up the bone yard
we’ll burn what we see
we’ll shoot the horizon
i can find it
i wave my presence of pretense
and save my questions for the end
i trade my obsession of a sense
the sense has met it’s end
and oh i grew too fast
oh where was my heart?
and i wanted death
to quit a bleeding spark
so back to the strain
of the far off run
and i will chew my reign
because i am not done
it’s not like you lost a friend
it’s not like you lost a brother
it’s not like you lost your arm
it’s only the end of the start
and oh i grew too fast
oh where was my heart?
and i wanted death
to quit a bleeding spark
so back to the strain
of the far off run
and i will chew my reign
because i am not done

in which amy and roger's epic detour is told through awesome playlists
so, i recently read a really great book - amy & roger's epic detour, by morgan matson. it's about two people who drive cross-country while deviating from a pre-planned route. it's also about grief, loss, friendship and learning how to move on. although mostly told from amy's perspective, the story also unfolds through pages from a journal, a report card, excerpts from meaningful books, receipts, postcards, emails, travel brochures, and sketches.
what's this have to do with music, you may be asking? well, much to my delight, the story is also told through seven of roger's (and, eventually, three of amy's) handwritten music playlists sprinkled throughout their journey.
an excerpt:
"You ready to put on some of your music?" Roger asked, as his mix started over again.
"That's okay," I said. My suspicions that Roger didn't like musicals had been confirmed when I'd seen his playlist. He seemed to like the kind of music that the in-the-know people at school always seemed to be talking about, the kinds of bands with names that didn't even sound like real names at all. Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin? That was a band? A real band, with fans other than Roger? So I had a feeling he wasn't going to be into my selection of Jason Robert Brown and Elvis. And I wasn't listening to Elvis anymore, anyway."
side note: when i read this passage to the husband, he said, "god, i love that band." and then, "you just read a book that mentioned someone still loves you, boris yeltsin?" which was sort of funny, and semi-proved amy's pov.
anyway, i was delighted to discover that roger had excellent taste in music - sprinkled throughout his playlists were many favorites, including frightened rabbit and the national (good arms vs. bad arms and fake empire respectively, hooray!), plus band of horses, neko case, owl city, vampire weekend, calexico/iron & wine, bee lee, the new pornographers, phoenix, and jose gonzalez. and, i know it's bizarre, but knowing these playlists really allowed me to enjoy the book further - because i'm one of those sorts who relates most life experiences to music, and to have that soundtrack in my head as amy and roger progressed across the country really helped me understand their frames of mind.
so today, i'm not only encouraging you to go out and read this fab book, but i'm also sharing a song from the first of roger's playlists (or, as listed in the book, "Leaving California" aka "Hitting the Road" aka "Snacks Are Important, But Not Quite as Important as Tunes" - amen, roger): vanilla twilight by owl city. applicable to both roger and amy's situations, this song, while light sounding, really strips loss down to the bone.
the stars lean down to kiss you
and i lay awake and miss you
pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere
because i'll doze off safe and soundly
but i'll miss your arms around me
i'd send a postcard to you, dear
because i wish you were here
i'll watch the night turn light blue
but it's not the same without you
because it takes two to whisper quietly
the silence isn't so bad
until i look at my hands and feel sad
because the spaces between my fingers
are right where yours fit perfectly
i'll find repose in new ways
though i haven't slept in two days
because cold nostalgia chills me to the bone
but drenched in vanilla twilight
i'll sit on the front porch all night
waist-deep in thought because when i think of you
i don't feel so alone
as many times as i blink i'll think of you tonight
i'll think of you tonight
when violet eyes get brighter
and heavy wings grow lighter
i'll taste the sky and feel alive again
and i'll forget the world that i knew
but i swear i won't forget you
oh, if my voice could reach back through the past
i'd whisper in your ear
"oh darling, i wish you were here"

in which daughter releases a new ep
so, after releasing a demos ep late last year (go HERE to read my review of it), daughter (aka elena tonra) has officially put out her debut ep entitled his young heart.
as with the demos ep, his young heart showcases thoughtful lyrics set against simple, yet powerful songs. daughter doesn't need an orchestra to back her, nor does she need mixers. the backbone of the ep is the well-honed relationship between elena and her guitar. everything else is like jewelry done right against the perfect LBD - simple and tasteful without blinding you to get attention.
some highlights:
* landfill - a song about the crippling uncertainty that can come with relationships. at times angry (and peeps, we're talking angry), other times plaintive, landfill is bitterly beautiful. throw me in the landfill/don't think about the consequences/throw me in the dirt pit/don't think about the choices you make
* the woods - delicate with a sublimely quiet guitar melody, the woods is my favorite song on the ep. we are what we are/don't need no excuses/for the scars/from our mothers/and we know what we know/'cause we're made of all the little bones of our fathers
* candles - while the majority of the song is elena with her guitar, every so often a drum beat appears alongside urgent vocals, making candles a fascinating study of what it means to be young and apt to make mistakes, especially when it comes to moving too fast in a relationship. well i have brittle bones/it seems/i bite my tongue and i torch my dreams/i have a little voice to speak of/and a mind of thoughts and secrecy/things cannot be reversed/we learn from the times we are cursed/if things cannot be reversed/learn from the ones we fear the most/learn from the ones we hate the most/blow out the candles
* switzerland - an accordion can be a really lovely instrument, as illustrated by switzerland. the tail end of the ep feels just like that - the end, and yet, at the same time, there's this undercurrent of hope amongst soaring, lo-fi vocals and windchimes that hint at gorgeous things to come. listen to this one loud while wearing your headphones.

in which cocknbullkid sings a love song of sorts to london
so, cocknbullkid has recently released a new single - asthma attack. it's, more or less, an ode to london and details a complex love-hate relationship with growing up in a big city.
bouncy and filled with dance club beats, asthma attack highlights anita blay's sweet vocals:
london i love you but you're bringing me down
in that special way that only you know how
so i'll come and i'll go
i'll to and i'll fro
and pledge allegiance
pledge allegiance to another town
you give me an asthma attack
still you keep me keep me coming back
must have a taste for the flouride
no other place that this city's like
la la la la la la la la la london
london i love you but i'm so confused
what part of me belongs to you
so i mix the blue with the gold
to make a colour so bold
all the different shades
all the different shades
of a lost soul
you give me an asthma attack
still you keep me keep me coming back
must have a taste for the flouride
no other place that this city's like
oh london i'll never forget you
you were the one i lost my two front teeth to
the first one that i lost my heart to
so how could i ever forget you

flashback friday - lucretia my reflection
so, out in my garage, almost one entire wall is filled with shelves containing cds. i kid you not. admittedly, a number of those are mine, but the vast majority belong to the husband, who came into our marriage with so many cds that there just wasn't room inside a house for all of them (although, he might disagree with that assessment). the great thing about this collection is every time i ask him if we have a song prior to 2004 (which is the year we got ipods and thus stopped buying physical cds), he can find it for me, no problem.
-----
of course. lucretia my reflection was perfect. my characters were relieved to finally get their (literal) ass-kicking fight scene written. and i was happy to rediscover a song i hadn't heard in a long time.
buy floodland, the album lucretia my reflection is off of, HERE.
such a fab music collection shouldn't go to waste, so i've decided to start a weekly meme called flashback friday, during which i'll highlight great songs from the past.
-----
recently, i was struggling with writer's block on codename: mo and told the husband, "i need angry, dark music that lots of bad things can happen to." within minutes, he came back with the sisters of mercy's floodland.
back in the 80's, the sisters of mercy were the epitome of goth rock. angry and gloomy, their songs mixed strong bass lines with synths and lyrics that either blistered or depressed. lucretia my reflection (which may or may not reflect a diss on former band members) is no exception:
i hear the roar of a big machine
two worlds and in between
hot metal and methedrine
i hear empire down
i hear empire down
i hear the roar of a big machine
two worlds and in between
love lost, fire at will
dum-dum bullets and shoot to kill, i hear
dive, bombers and
empire down
empire down
i hear the sons of the city and dispossessed
get down, get undressed
get pretty, but you and me
we got the kingdom, we got the key
we got the empire, now as then
we don't doubt, we don't take direction
lucretia, my reflection, dance the ghost with me
we look hard
we look through
we look hard to see for real
such things i hear, they don't make sense
i don't see much evidence
i don't feel
i don't feel
i don't feel
a long train held up by page on page
a hard reign held up by rage
once a railroad
now it's done
i hear the roar of a big machine
two worlds and in between
hot metal and methedrine
i hear empire down
we got the empire, now as then
we don't doubt, we don't take reflection
lucretia, my direction, dance the ghost with me
